St Stephen’s Decommissioning Service

DSC_0991Our church building is being demolished in the next few weeks – two years after it sustained major earthquake damage.  We decommissioned it today at morning worship. Of the various people gathered some indicated the special links they had with the building – being at the opening in 1959, being married there, and celebrating baptisms and other milestones.  It was good to have two of the former ministers there: Revs Len Pierce and Irving Rutherford.  Our special guest was Rev Ray Coster, the Presbyterian Church national Moderator.  He preached a thoughtful sermon and declared the building no longer a house of worship.  We look forward to what is next!
